Pharma Packaging Companies To Help Fight Against Counterfeit Drugs

Published: 02-Dec-2009

Hologram-Seal and watermarks ensures packaged pharmaceutical safety

Schreiner MediPharm's transparent-Hologram-Seal is set to provide evidence against tampering and counterfeiting of drugs. The hologram has been helpful in ensuring packaged pharmaceutical safety of drugs.

Reportedly, the seal is fixed with heavy-duty adhesive and any attempt to peel it off damages the packaging surface. It features a 2D single-image design and dynamic special effects. The seal is transparent, which ensures variable data, as batch information, remains legible, reported Converting Magazine.

Catalent Pharma's DigiTrack, an anti-counterfeiting system, also adds to the fight against counterfeit drugs. It adds a covert watermark to packets by embedding an unique pattern directly on existing package graphics. The printed watermark is visible to the naked eye but can be only identified by a web-enabled mobile phone, computer or hand-held reader.

Reportedly, the code on the package can be identified as a match to specific unit. Track-and-trace data is then transmitted to the user's device for instant product ID and origin to verify authenticity. If the code doesn't match, then its a counterfeit drug which is stopped from entering the market.
