Chesapeake Pharma Installs New Lithrone At Leicester Plant

Chesapeake Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Packaging, a global supplier of paperboard packaging, is installing a six colour Komori Lithrone S40 printing press at its Leicester operation as part of a major divisional investment programme.

Chesapeake said that the choice of press, following exhaustive trials at Komori’s Graphic Technology Centres in Japan and Holland, will be installed in June. The press has been specified with Komori’s highest automation package, which includes fully automated plate changing and the Komori KHS-AI fast make ready system.

Mark Wilson, operations director of Leicester at Chesapeake, said: “As part of an extensive evaluation which covered the B1 machines from all the top five press manufacturers, our Leicester team went to Japan and witnessed unmatched make ready speeds on high quality pharmaceutical work.

“The Lithrone’s fast start-up with its pre-inking and de-inking systems also significantly reduces waste which fits perfectly with the group’s commitment to the environment. The press configuration provides us with a very robust and flexible system that will help us to ensure that we continue to deliver the very best in printed carton products to our customers.

“Controls on the new Lithrone 40 press include PDC-SII closed loop colour management. As a result of our examination of this on-the-run colour maintenance system, we also decided to retrospectively add it to one of Leicester’s existing three Lithrone 28” presses. Along with the retrofitted KMS on two Lithrone 28’s these have already delivered productivity and quality benefits.”
